Just another weekend in Vancouver

The weekend of September 29th-Oct. 1st we decided to stay in Vancouver; the forecast wasn't too great. We visited the Vancouver Aquarium on Saturday and then went of a hike on Sunday.

The Vancouver Aquarium is located in Stanley Park, which can be a challenge to drive through considering there are only 1 way streets! On our way, we passed by the Totem poles, which we obviously checked out. They aren't originals but they're replicas and each one represents a different type of pole. For example one marks the death of a person, the other was used to hold up structural beams in their shelters, another was in honour of a God, etc. Really big and a lot work must have gone into making them.

The Aquarium was great! It's really big and has a lot of indoor aqariums filled with fish, snails, HUGE clams, eels, sharks and sting raes to name a few and the outoor tanks had a variety of seals, dolphins and beluga's! After the beluga show (they are SO cute!) we realized it was 4:30pm - so what do you do in Stanley Park at that time? You have tea! We had dessert wine tea with pastries - how British of us.

That night we went to The Observatory Restaurant at the top of Grouse Mountain for our anniversary dinner. It was really really really good! Tom had grilled squid stuffed with lobster as an appetizer, then grilled California sea bass with veggies for dinner and then a BC cheese plate for desert. I had beef carpaccio for an appetizer, pan-seared halibut with crab and veggies for dinner (yup! I had fish for dinner!!!) and then I had the delice of chocolat for dessert. And to accompany our delicious meal we had a bottle of BC white wine called Blasted Church....ok it sounds really bad but it was really good. Anyway, all in all an amazing dinner with an amazing view of Vancouver!

Sunday we went for a CRAZY hike in Squamish (half way between Vancouver and Whistler). The peak is well known to hikers and rock climbers and was definetly a feat! The trail to the top was 2.5 km with a 550m elevation change!!!! Our trail guide book described the climb as a "steep scramble" - no kidding! The way up was insane!!! At the top we had to use chains that were bolted into the side of the rock to help us up and, the
piece de resistance, a ladder!!! Have you ever seen a ladder on a hiking trail?! The view was incredible from the top and was well worth the hike. For the descent, we decided to use a different route, which turned out to be a lot more challenging. Half way down we realized that we were hiking down a dried up stream/waterfall! Great hike though!

Unfortunately not many pictures turned out very good, but you can check out the ones that did in our PHOTO ALBUM.
