Another rainy weekend in Vancouver...

The weekend of October 14-15th we got a nice preview of the weather to come: rain. It rained Friday night, Saturday late afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday all day. Yeah. So unfortunately, we didn't go on any great adventures. Friday we went out for Korean BBQ and rented X-Men 3. We then came to the realization that we are seriously behind in movies - we haven't even seen The DaVinci Code!!!
Saturday we went to visit Fort Langley, which is about a 30 mins drive east of Vancouver. It was really cool and very interesting. Once you're out here and see postings for historical sites you begin to realize how bad our education system is. Did you learn much of BC history? Coming from French school, I definitely did not. It was more important to understand what happened between Upper and Lower Canada and why the English stole Canada from French...anyway. Fort Langley was owned and run by The Hudson's Bay Company. They traded fur with the First Nation's people that lived across the river, and then once the gold rush began (yes, there was a gold rush in BC along the Fraser Valley - another thing I didn't know!) they traded goods and food with the Americans who came through. HBC actually encouraged the men that lived in the Fort to marry the First Nation women so that the ties between HBC and the First Nation's people would be more secure. The Fort is now operated by the Federal government and the people there did a great job. We learned so much. They had people in outfits of the period in almost all the buildings explaining what it was used for and how those who worked in there lived (ex: blacksmith, cooper, etc.).

NOTE: We also made solved a BIG mystery at Fort Langley. A painting on the wall in the main house is of the signing of the proclamation of the establishment of BC. One man in the painting is said to be an "unknown Royal Engineer", however, we believe we've discovered who he might be related to....

We don't have many photos this week PHOTO ALBUM.
